The most daunting thing for me about joining Mastodon/Fediverse was picking an instance.

Having joined one, a RL metaphor emerges for me: "it's like picking an apartment building."

You need to evaluate the management. Do they respect tenant rights? Is the desk clerk skeevy?

Do you want to live in a big impersonal complex? Or a little boarding house, where people share a lot and have house parties? You can even be a "home owner" and run your own instance (pay the bills, fix the plumbing).

I have started using this metaphor when recommending friends to use it.

The metaphor extends to the available feeds:

'Home': chat w/ my friends circle, including neighbors and visitors you invited in.

'Local': building party, hang w/ neighbors.

'Federated': take a walk down the street, see weird stuff, chat w/ random strangers, but keep your guard up.

Of course, it's not a perfect match, but I think it quickly conveys the social experience and trade-offs between different instances.

če bi slučajno kdo od starih uporabnikov želel obnoviti svoj račun na #TootSi (pred časom smo zamrznili večino neaktivnih računov) je sedaj (v novih verzijah Mastodona) možno te račune odmrzniti - a žal je stara vsebina teh računov izbrisana.

Media descriptions are a hard thing to get a handle on, and it's a new habit to get into.

You can follow @PleaseCaption who will yell at you whenever you forget to describe your media - it's a big help!

How to describe:
*Include the media and style ("a rough black ink sketch")
*Include the subject ("...of a woman in a field")
*Include the mood ("she looks happy and the scene is peaceful").

Tell the story of your image to someone who can't see it.

Righto, here’s my fedi-tips:

- it’s slower here, less addictive than corp social media. This is a good thing, try and enjoy it.
- you see what you follow. No ads, no obscure reshuffling, no manipulating your emotions. Enjoy that too.
- please consider using CWs. Could it hurt, shock, upset, harm?
- please describe your pictures if you can
- give benefit of the doubt: text easily misleads
- shared something negative? Maybe follow with positive action.
- fash, queerphobes, bigots: fuck off 💚
