DJ Sundog from the *new* toot-lab
so today we discovered the new addition to our #3dPrinting robot family, a donated German RepRap x400 v4, seems to be fully functional if a bit clumsy at this stage - the raspberry pi controller has been swapped out for a quad-core pentium “industrial pc” with 4 gigs of ram and a 128GB SSD (partitioned to only use 64GB?) running ubuntu 16.04 and repetier-server.

the front touch panel controls are an adafruit board to put a 840x400 lcd panel and touch membrane together with usb and hdmi connections back to the computer.

the display is showing X server with a minimal desktop environment that launches chromium in kiosk mode to a secondary web interface specifically for the touch interface for the printer but still supplied by repetier-server, so I was able to whitelist my other computer into the repetier-server config and use the touch interface as a web page from a remote pc, so we can add a more conveniently located tablet if we want.

the controller board still appears to be the stock arduino mega, so there are numerous easy upgrade wins there.

the extruders both heat up to almost 300 degrees in no time flat, and the bed gets itself up to 100 degrees eventually. we got it to print both nylon and ASA today with no issues other than it being on a furniture dolly and shaking itself to hell and gone, making layer adhesion and y-axis accuracy shit. we’ll find someplace to put it and get it off casters.

still need to get the second extruder set up in orca slicer to do some dual-filament prints, will get that set up this week coming at some point for sure.

got the printer upgraded up through ubuntu 22.04 before I left for the day, and got it onto our zerotier network so we can run it from anywhere, because nothing says safety like “I am literally kilometers away, you can’t hurt me”

all in all, I think it’s gonna end up being a really nice printer to have around once we’ve got it all situated and set.

Ari [APz] Sovijärvi
Every time Jackbot is being serviced, I check the condition of one of the first bigger 3D printed pinball parts I made back in the days. This guide rail for the moving target bank is not available as a separate part, so you have to buy the whole thing if it breaks.

I got so annoyed I modelled a sturdier version of it. This is one of the prototypes, that has been in use for over 3 years now, without any cracks or other problems.

I later released the model, so anyone needing can print out their own:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6964621

#pinball #pinrepair #3dprinting
