I find it fascinating that birds just come with engineering instructions. Currently watching sunbirds build a nest at my balcony and I always wonder how they know how to do what they do

A few days ago I commented that the Chinese on #Xiaohongshu are sensitive about #ChineseNewYear being called Lunar New Year.
I promised I will find the content explaining why.
Lunar calendar - Islamic calendar. Chinese calendar - lunarsolar.
Interestingly, President Obama may be the source of the Lunar New Year term.
I think due to the massive influence of English around the world this term started being used widely, which shows how culture can be influenced/misinterpreted like this. I think the Chinese are upset that someone can just come and rename their festival like this.
(fyi not every Chinese is offended by this btw. Generally Chinese in Malaysia don't seem as bothered, tho we call it CNY).

Why are Chinese social networking apps so successful? Question to #Mastodon folks. What is your theory about why people have gotten so mean on commercial #socialmedia ?

My conversation with @justincox around his recent article (do read it, it's great) made me wonder about this. I think the migration to #xiaohongshu was eye opening to many because the environment there was more pleasant.

I personally think it's due to the high female demographic of xhs and also because of its strict moderation standards. It's like a strictly moderated subreddit with its own culture, and whose community actively helps the moderators moderate the tone of the app.

My theory based ony observation.

Chinese man uploads videos expressing his opinion on Luigi Mangione and the U.S. healthcare system onto Chinese-owned Rednote. Doesn't get censored.

He then reposts these same videos on American-owned YouTube. All videos get taken down for "promotion violent criminal organizations"??????????

You tell me. Which country appears more free, and which one censors the truth?

After spending a considerable amount of time on the socialist and communist parts of REDnote, I've noticed a difference between it and Mastodon. On REDnote, people tend to focus more on educating people on communist and socialist culture and theory, whereas on Mastodon, people seem to most focus more on criticizing capitalism. Both are obviously important, but I found this difference interesting.

The great social media migration: Sudden influx of US users to 小红书 connects Chinese and Americans like never before. 🎉

The sudden migration of US users has created an unlikely platform for Chinese and American users to interact, with some American users appealing for respect and understanding.

Chinese users have warmly welcomed the newcomers, with some even sharing video tutorials to help them navigate the app.

The best thing about this TikTok ban fiasco is that it introduced me to REDnote, which I had previously not known existed, and now I'm never going back. Hopefully, this TikTok stuff pushed REDnote into the international sphere enough for it to gain more popularity and maybe even be able to become a major contender in the social media world outside of China.
