Glide of a Laughing Gull

I say this laughing gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) fly over at Gulfport, Mississippi. I have a space for this image or something like it above wide closet door in my office.

Laughing Gull and Wave, Black and White

This is a laughing (Leucophaeus atricilla) that I saw in Gulfport, Mississippi. What really caught my eye is the little boiling wave to the right of the gull.

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

Wading Watcher

I saw this laughing gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) on the beach at Gulfport, Mississippi. These birds always seem to have sleepy looking eyes.

The photograph captures a solitary laughing gull standing on wet sand near a shoreline facing the camera and to the left. The gull's front and left side are visible to the camera. The gull's relatively small head is adorned with mostly white feathers but there are smudges of gray, indicating that this is a non-breeding adult. It has dark sleepy looking eyes and a black bill that curves down to a sharp point at the end. The gull has predominantly grey and white plumage and black legs and feet. What's so funny?

This is a laughing gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) flying overhead at Galveston, Texas.

This gull is flying directly overhead, and its underside is visible. It is mostly white, but its head and wing tips are black. It has a black beak curved at the end, there is a subdued white eye ring. Its swept wings are extended as if gliding. Short black legs and feed lay back. against its tail. "Laughing Gulls are medium-sized gulls with fairly long wings and long legs that impart a graceful look when they are flying or walking. They have stout, fairly long bills. Laughing Gulls are medium gray above and white below. Summer adults have a crisp black hood, white arcs around the eye, and a reddish bill. In winter, the hood becomes a blurry gray mask on a white head. The legs are reddish black to black. Immatures are much browner and more subtly patterned than adults; they take 2-3 years to gain adult plumage." - allaboutbirds.org

G-Force Gull

This Laughing Gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) swept by at eye level while I stood on a corner in Galveston, Texas. It probably ran a stop sign.

As a child, I learned that the white birds that flew on the beaches were Seagulls. It wasn't until recently that I found out that there is no species named seagull. Instead, there are many different species of gulls and terns. This is a laughing gull, and it is flying for left to right in the frame. Its body is mostly white and shaped like a narrow football. The bird's head is black, it doesn't appear to have a neck, though I sure there are neck bones in there somewhere. Its eyes are black but with white eye lids that stand out between the black head feathers and black eye. The black and orange beak is relatively long and the upper mandible hooks over the lower at the end. The wings are raised high, light filters through the flight feathers. The flight feathers at the tips of the wings are brownish orange. Reddish legs and feet lay back against the white tail which is partially fanned out and flat at the end.
