I thought only FairPhone made repairable phones, but HMD does too. They don't do everything that makes FairPhone great, but they're definitely worth consideration.

One problem: only 3 years of updates. 7 years of part availability can't fix that.

Maybe @LineageOS, @e_mydata, or @postmarketOS will support it.

@forteller @ueeu @DresdnerForschungswerk @murena @Fairphone Thanks! Yes, I've looked at #fairphone and #murena . Nice to see that there are options. Running android (I see fairphones can come with it preinstalled) would not be an option, but /e/OS looks interesting. How does it hold up #privacy wise compared to e.g. #GrapheneOS , #calyxos or #LineageOS ? Haven't tried any of those, just read about them. I see very polarised opinions when I search. Little balanced comparison. A plus that you can get a fairphone with /e/OS preinstalled, of course (It's me. I'm "moderately- or non-technical people").

10 years ago I ran LineageOS on my phone and at home I ran a really restrictive firewall. I was blocking port 5228 outbound & I think that caused the phone to factory reset sometimes but I'm not sure. It was really annoying when it happened. Has anyone ever come across it before?

The linux desktop fight, which I actually thought had come to an end ;)

I used linux since #kde 1.1, allmost 30 years, and KDE most of that time, all though I did try Gnome and some other window managers from time to time. Countless Linux distros.

I have phone running #postmarketos with #plasmamobile, not really usable yet, though slowly improving. My best bid for a google/ios free mobile os usable in a foreseeable future would be #lineageos based, probably like #e_OS, with a not-google-run app store. Such a system would need a business model and economics to run, it does cost money.
My daily phone (#fairphone fp 3 with /e/os) is running quite well, but there is a long way for a setup that is usable by the masses, and the monopolists are bullies, like their unfortunate president.

We need to join forces :)

On this page you can clearly see how difficult Xiaomi makes it to install an alternative operating system; the bootloader unlocker is unbelievably program which is proprietary and runs in a proprietary operating system. Now I would have run it if my model was supported specifically

Xiaomi only allows you to unlock four devices a year, just four devices a year

Those of us who have other phones can check if another Linux for Android runs on their device

Atm I'm looking at Lineage OS for my Android devices

I have scrolled through the most important parts of lineage us website.

One thing that you have to realize is that you're taking a grave risk when you are installing another operating system on the Android phone, at least that's what the manufacturer will tell you.

The manufacturer will **not** tell you that, you're freeing yourself from their **stranglehold** when you do this.
They will also not tell you that chances are, your device will work much more efficiently, because it will not have any bloatware, I repeat any bloatware what so ever

One thing they will never ever tell you, is that they make deliberately as difficult as possible for you to install another operating system, on your phone, your device, which you own, which you are the absolute Master of

The phone manufacturer will absolutely make sure, that they will never tell you, that they even put traps on your phone, when you install another operating system, just so that it bricks, so that you come running screaming and go back into their strangle hold

All these factors make installing another operating system on an Android phone risky, tedious, nerve wracking, and not worth it, if the phone is brand new, and the money you spent on it, isn't just chump change that you can easily afford if it breaks.

Just looking at the enormous list of do's and don'ts that you have to follow to the letter, clearly show per model, per manufacturer, how many traps have been put in, just so you are prevented to install another operating system, with which you free your phone from the stranglehold of the manufacturer, a phone that you have bought with your money, a phone that you own, a phone that you have the right to put whatever operating system you want upon.

On top of everything, your specific model of phone, needs to be supported even if there's just one letter difference, you should not even attempt to install that version of Linux on your phone, because the chances of breaking your phone literally bricking your phone, are astronomically High

The phone I need Lineage OS on is the one I'm working on right now, the phone overheats dramatically fast, has very poor physical Cooling, which became apparent when a broken patch was pushed to the phone, by Xiaomi, a couple of months ago.

Because of the overheating it needs to be shut down for most parts of the day making it a useless device

Xiaomi does the following to make it very difficult for you to unlock their fabricated devices:

* The boot unlocker is personal and you need to make an account for it
* An arbitrary limit is put upon the amount of Xiaomi devices that you can unlock per day per week per month.
* Every account can only unlock four devices
* Essentially Xiaomi is sending a f$ck you, towards you, as the owner of your devices, when you want to unlock the bootloader, so that you can put an arbitrary, much more stable operating system on the devices which YOU possess

My specific device is not supported yet by Lineage OS Xiaomi Redmi Note 12S
That means that I have to stop right there because the installation sequence specifically states that you need to double check that the image you put on the device is specifically designed for not only your model but your model to the letter so I need one for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12S

By now I do not care which Linux distribution I put on this Android, just as long as it's specifically supported

The Journey through which I went to attempt to install Lineage OS on my Xiaomi Redmi note 12s has taught me the following

Android phone manufacturers do not like their clients. Android phone manufacturers detest their clients and treat them like slaves. Android phone manufacturers want their phones to be theirs forever, even when they sell them to you.

The rights to own a physical piece of hardware, are irrefutable yet manufacturers hate your rights in that respect

I think my next phone is almost certainly going to be a #Google Pixel 8a, and I am immediately going to erase it and install #grapheneOS or #LineageOS.

$600 for the base level #iPhone 16e is fucking ridiculous. I hate Google even more than I hate #Apple, but at least with the Pixel phones, I can run grapheneOS or LineageOS.

With every year that has passed since Steve Jobs handed over the reins and died, Tim Cook has made Apple worse, and it's not going to get better in the foreseeable future.

So the plan is this. First my #fairphone. I decided to give a #UbuntuTouch a try first because getting away from android sounds nice. If that's not working for me, then i believe I'll bonder between #e/os #calyxos and #lineageos or maybe #grapheneos needs to think realy hard then because.. Well.. I'm open for information from experiences of others.

AFTER I'm happy with my phone. I'll move to my mediapc. It's a hp mini thing.. I had #linuxmint in it before, but then we had television that had weird stuff happening and I couldn't get them to work together, so currently there's win10, but now I got, for free, newish tv so I'll definitely want to go back to linux. I'm thinking of #zorinos and if it's good then probably but it on my school laptop also. There's #fedora currently, it's working and quite stable, but there's also lots of aspects that I don't really like.

So that's my #nerd plans.. When I have time.

But please, don't tell my boss, he already has gotten a smell, that I know more about IT than I feel comfortable..

I have used a #PocoPhoneF1 as my only mobile for around seven years now. It was the floor model at the shop, and they were going to throw it away. I knew it was well-supported in #LineageOS (though I hadn't yet experienced how toxic their devs were), so I pounced.

It's a reliable device and the battery hasn't needed a replacement yet, but the #USBC port can't negotiate power without torque on the cable any longer.

I know there are many places that do this kind of service in #London, but I am squeamish about letting strangers have hardware access. Does anyone know of a reputable #repair place I could entrust my personal property and data to? West London preferred, but central or Stratford are possible.

Also ich bin mit etwas Portierung Zen, Apps neu schreiben / Reverse enginnering .. da Brauch ich zu lang, das passiert nicht :3

Just got my #Fairphone5

The last time I bought a #SmartPhone was almost 8 years ago, and the #tech has improved quite a lot in that time. As for the #Fairphone 5 itself:

  • Touch screen is high-def, very responsive, and much, much easier to use with screen keyboards than my older smartphone. I can see myself actually writing code on this, something I have never even considered trying to do on a touch screen before.
  • Build quality is much, much nicer than it looks in pictures, to me it feels as nice as an iPhone.
  • It is a bit heavy, but not much worse than my previous phone, and has a larger screen.
  • Fairly easy to #DeGoogle — I just decline all prompts for Google log-ins, and install #FDroid apps to replace the default Google apps.
  • Boot loader can be unlocked, and I will probably install #LineageOS , but the default Android 13 install is already quite good, and I might try updating to Android 14 first.
  • Linus Tech Tips was not lying about the notification settings being too damn loud.

After using my old phone for 8 years, I am surprised how fast this phone is now. Everything about it just works better. I suppose this would have been true for just about any phone I could buy, but I can’t see myself wanting for better tech specs. I really hope this one lasts me 10 years or more, I bought it specifically because it is the most repairable phone I was able to find anywhere.

First impression after using it for a day: I could not be more pleased, it has exceeded all of my expectations, 10/10 would recommend.

#UnplugTrump - Tipp15:

Happy I Love Free Software Day! 💕

Unfortunately, this year I could not join nor organize any in-person celebration, BUT of course I want to share my gratitude to the many, countless #FreeSoftware services I don’t merely use, but actually depend on.

Last year, I decided to focus only on #YunoHost, because it would have been crazy to list all the projects I use and I love.

This time, even if I will most certainly forget someone, I am challenging myself to mention all the #LibreSoftware my life is powered by.

Without further ado, THANK YOU to:

  • @yunohost, for powering Nebuchadnezzar
  • @fedora, for running my beloved #Framework laptop
  • @frameworkcomputer, for designing and building repairable, #Linux-friendly and truly open hardware
  • @gnome and @GTK, for being just gorgeous
  • @calyxos (thus @LineageOS), for powering my #Fairphone5
  • #Obtainium, for making me directly download apps on my phone, and @fdroidorg for distributing them
  • #AuroraStore, for proxying the download of apps I am doomed to get from Google Play
  • @element, for developing #Synapse, even though the new proprietary Synapse Pro is VERY PROBLEMATIC AND DISAPPOINTING
  • #Fractal, for being the most beautiful and awesome #Matrix client ever
  • @signalapp, for keeping me connected with the people I love
  • @Mastodon, for also maintaining a feature-packed experimental fork (#GlitchSoc), that is what Pan runs
  • #Tuba and #Moshidon, for being the most beautiful and awesome #Mastodon clients ever
  • #Firefox, for still remaining the best possible #browser choice, despite #Mozilla’s governance messiness
  • @openstreetmap, for allowing us to find the right path, both literally and metaphorically!
  • @organicmaps, for being the simplest, cleanest, yet feature-rich #OSM client and navigation app
  • @protonvpn, for making me browse safely from/to anywhere in the planet and @protonprivacy #ProtonMail, for hosting my email, despite the latest alarming political statements…
  • @libreoffice, for allowing me to draft documents with ease, the last of which was my #CV
  • #LanguageTool, for preventing me from making embarassing spelling mistakes
  • @photoprism, for safely storing and indexing all my photographic memories, on Aby, and for providing stellar and friendly support too!
  • #Actual, for moderating the very likely risk of ending up completely broke, since it forces me to manage my finances consciously and coherently
  • @readeck, for storing and sorting ALL my varied and overwhelming inputs
  • @nextcloud, for storing and synchronizing my data, for its #calendar, its #tasks, and all its awesome apps
  • #Rustdesk, for preventing my friends and family members from going crazy, by allowing me to remotely connect to their devices and directly address the issues they have
  • #Listmonk, for sending out my newsletter
  • @eleventy, for powering all the websites I maintain, above all the virtual representation of my mind, and for being the only reason why I resist and try to continue learning #JavaScript
  • @forgejo, for giving us a chance to truly control and collectively develop the sources of our software, but most importantly @Codeberg, for RESISTING, RESISTING, RESISTING, despite the hatred and attacks nazi assholes throw at them
  • @musicbrainz for keeping music knowledge open and free, and @ListenBrainz for scrobbling the crazy music I listen to
  • The @fsfe, for promoting this celebration and fighting the good fight!

Lastly, but most importantly, the biggest thank you goes to all the free software libraries and dependencies the above mentioned #software are made of/built with, including #C, #JavaScript, #Python, #Rust, and all community-maintained programming languages.

I am super sorry if I forgot someone!
